Chef's Tips
If the sauce becomes too thick during simmering, add a splash of water or beef stock to achieve a looser consistency.
To sneak in extra vegetables, grate a small carrot or courgette into the beef mixture along with the onion and pepper.
Prepare Ingredients and Sauce
Finely chop the onion and dice the green pepper. Mince the 3 garlic cloves. In a medium bowl, combine the tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, and brown sugar. Stir well and set aside.
Brown the Beef
Heat the oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the beef mince and sauté for about 5 minutes until it is fully cooked and no longer pink, breaking it up with a spatula as it cooks. If excess fat accumulates, tilt the pan and spoon or blot it out using paper towels.
Sauté Vegetables and Garlic
Season the cooked beef with sea salt and black pepper. Stir in the chopped onion and diced green pepper. Cook for another 5 minutes until the vegetables are tender and the beef is browned. Add the minced garlic and sauté for 30 seconds, stirring constantly until fragrant.
Simmer the Mixture
Pour the prepared sauce mixture into the skillet and bring it to a light boil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer uncovered for 15 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened to your desired consistency. Adjust seasoning to taste.
Toast the Buns
While the mixture simmers, lightly toast the hamburger buns. This can be done in a dry pan, under the grill, or in a toaster.
Serve
Serve the sloppy joe mixture hot on toasted hamburger buns.
